Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, raised the UAE flag at 12pm Tuesday in Creek Park in the presence of more than 5,000 students from more than 100 different nationalities.

Speaking on the occasion marking UAE Flag Day, Shaikh Mohammad emphasised the importance of this occasion, which symbolises a number of important national sentiments that stir the spirit of dedication and loyalty to the UAE. He added that the occasion also reminds us of our national duty and commitments towards the UAE flag, giving our all to ensure that it remains flying high. UAE Flag Day falls on November 3, coinciding with the day on which President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was sworn in as President.

“I issued instructions to hoist UAE flags at a unified time. I wanted to emphasise the reality that all emirates are one, reaffirming our loyalty to the nation and that we work towards achieving one objective: to ensure the UAE’s stature and consolidating out loyalty to our leader, my brother President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan,” said Shaikh Mohammad.

“Our flag is the symbol of our unity and its power. Our duty is to ensure that the flag keeps flying as a beacon of our stature and honour among people of the world. This duty requires us to work diligently in our jobs and to take the initiative to accomplish more achievements and safeguard them. We must always use the flag to motivate us towards excellence in all fields,” added Shaikh Mohammad.

On this occasion, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also tweeted about the significance of the occasion.

Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed said in his first tweet: “Today we raise the UAE flag with love and appreciation for the president’s continuous national efforts and initiatives and for the country to remain standing tall.”

In a subsequent tweet, he said: “What has been manifested under the banner of the UAE flag is a journey of success, achievements and gains that the grateful and loyal children of the UAE have made possible by being devoted to the value of giving.”

Another tweet by Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed: “Our cohesion today is what our parents and grandparents have embedded in us. It has been planted deep in the roots of the nation. We vow to God to preserve it for our future generations.”

Earlier, addressing children who participated in the event, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid said: “You are the future; it is your hands that shape it. You do not celebrate Flag Day by only using your hands, but also your minds, ideas and creativity. Safeguarding the flag and the noble values it symbolises requires knowledge and education. You have to work hard in your studies and always contribute your innovative ideas, and we will always work on ensuring that you can achieve this. We want you to be successful and outstanding so you can occupy positions of leadership in the future.”

The celebrations marking Flag Day included playing the newly recorded UAE national anthem, which was approved recently by Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid.

The event was attended by Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, and other senior officials.

On the occasion, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid tweeted: “I was honoured to attend a flag hoisting event with 5,000 students. Raised in unity is one flag for a strong nation who is proud of its identity and achievements. Hoisting the flag shows respect and loyalty to the union. May God protect our nation, our flag and our president,”
