Sanae Takaichi has made history by winning a landmark vote to become Japan’s first-ever female prime minister. The 64-year-old conservative, often referred to as Japan’s “Iron Lady,” is known for her admiration of former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Takaichi secured the top leadership role on her third attempt, becoming the fourth prime minister in just five years from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has been plagued by a series of political scandals.
A prominent figure within the party’s hardline faction, Takaichi is a protégé of the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose influence continues to shape LDP politics.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump previously described her as a “highly respected person of great wisdom.”
As prime minister, Takaichi faces a number of pressing challenges—including reviving Japan’s sluggish economy, managing strained ties with the United States, and unifying a deeply divided LDP.
