April begins with several updates that affect daily life across the UAE. Schools continue with distance learning, banking authentication is being modernized, and a visa grace period for residents abroad has ended.

Whether you are a parent, a frequent traveller, or simply keeping up with local news, here are five key updates to know as the new month begins:

  1. Schools extend distance learning until April 17

The UAE has extended distance learning until Friday, April 17, 2026, for students, teachers, and administrative staff across all nurseries, kindergartens, and public and private schools nationwide.

The Ministry of Education cited safety and wellbeing as the main reason for the extension. The situation will continue to be reviewed weekly, so the date could be adjusted depending on developments.

This continues a period of remote learning that began on March 2 and was extended at the start of Term 3 on March 23, after spring break was moved forward due to regional tensions. Schools have adapted quickly, with students and faculty logging on from different time zones and countries.

  1. Banks fully move to app-based authentication

Since 2025, UAE banks have been shifting away from SMS OTPs, following Central Bank guidelines. All banks now require app-based authentication for domestic and international transactions. SMS and email OTPs were discontinued by March 2026.

This change enhances security. SMS and email codes are vulnerable to interception, SIM swapping, and phishing attacks. In-app verification, often using fingerprints, facial recognition, or device-based approval, provides a safer alternative by eliminating reliance on mobile networks or emails.

  1. Visa grace period for expired residency holders ends March 31

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) confirmed that a special grace period allowing residents with expired visas to return to the UAE ended on March 31.

The initiative allowed residents stranded abroad due to expired visas and travel disruptions to return without obtaining a new entry visa. Normal entry procedures now apply, including the requirement for a valid visa.

  1. Dubai Miracle Garden offers Dh30 tickets for residents

Dubai Miracle Garden is offering UAE residents tickets for Dh30 (inclusive of VAT) until May 31, the end of its current season. Children aged 12 and under can enter for free. Visitors must present a valid Emirates ID to access the discount.

The offer follows a free-entry initiative during Ramadan in March, which attracted tens of thousands of residents.

  1. Traffic fines and payment rules updated

Starting April 1, 2026, the UAE has introduced updates to traffic fines and payment procedures. Drivers can now pay fines online or via official app services within 30 days of issuance to avoid additional penalties. New rules also clarify points deduction and repeat-offender charges. Authorities emphasize adherence to ensure road safety and efficient traffic management.
