Talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States in Geneva ended without a breakthrough, despite cautious optimism from the American side. The meetings continued late into Tuesday evening and briefly resumed on Wednesday, with participants describing the dialogue as “difficult” but constructive.

According to the parties, some progress was achieved on military issues, including discussions on the line of contact and potential ceasefire monitoring mechanisms. However, key political disagreements remain unresolved.

The main stumbling block continues to be the status of Donbas. Moscow insists on formalizing its control over the region, arguing that its position reflects the results of referendums held in the territories under its control and the need to ensure long-term security for the Russian-speaking population. Kyiv rejects this stance. The future of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant also remains under discussion.

Further consultations are expected in Switzerland. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that while there has been some progress on military matters, the political track remains significantly more complicated.
