A Ukrainian drone attack has caused another major fire at the Russian oil refinery in Tuapse – the third strike on the Black Sea port in less than two weeks. Vladimir Putin condemned it as a “strike against civilian infrastructure”. Dense black smoke was seen rising from the refinery, which has an annual production capacity of about 12 million tonnes of oil.
The incidents have raised serious environmental concerns. Preliminary reports indicate that damage to refinery and port infrastructure may have resulted in an oil spill in the Black Sea, with potential contamination affecting several kilometers of coastline, though the full extent has not yet been confirmed.
Additional concerns include possible pollution of the Tuapse River and air, as well as traces of petroleum products detected in rainfall. There are also reports of impacts on marine life, including dolphin and other marine animal fatalities, alongside increasing pressure on local ecosystems.
Experts caution that, if confirmed, the incidents could lead to significant and potentially long-lasting ecological consequences for the Black Sea region.
