The National -- Abu Dhabi's speed cameras will scan vehicles to detect drivers with expired licences from April 15, the city's police force has said.

Those caught will face a Dh500 fine, four black points, and their vehicles will be confiscated for seven days.

Brig Gen Ahmad Al Shehhi, deputy head of Abu Dhabi Traffic Police, urged motorists to hurry up and renew their expired car registrations to avoid the stringent measures.

He said the smart system saves officers time and ensures road safety.
