Stella McCartney is joined by Cara Delevingne, FKA Twigs and Ed Sheeran on the Met Gala 2024 red carpet – each in custom looks referencing designs iconic to the British fashion house, from Savile Row tailoring to knitwear to embroidery. Handcrafted from 100% sustainable materials, the pieces are inspired by the brand’s Winter 2024 collection and the Costume Institute’s Spring 2024 theme, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’.
Honouring the ‘Sleeping Beauties’ inspiration, the one-of-a-kind looks explore notions of renewal and rebirth, timeless craftsmanship and cutting-edge technologies – embodied and connected by a fil rouge of sustainably created diamonds by VRAI, illustrating the possibilities of pairing innovation with nature’s beauty. The diamonds are gently grown in the first-ever certified carbon-neutral, zero-emissions foundry, powered purely by renewable energy, and are cut and polished for maximum brilliance by expert craftspeople using over 243 intricate steps, placing their quality in the top 1% globally.
Actor, eco-activist and Cabaret star Cara Delevingne wears a custom-made hooded and backless bodice hand-embroidered with over 500 carats of sustainably created diamonds; the piece has the emissions equivalency of recycling 11.3 tonnes of waste, with every carat of created diamonds produced saving 143 lbs of carbon dioxide. This sits over a draping and ruched skirt, constructed from cream forest-friendly viscose and bio-acetate cady, and is finished with a limited-edition iconic Falabella bag in crackled silver, platinum platform sandals from the Spring 2024 collection and tennis bracelets using created diamonds. Delevingne recently fronted Stella McCartney’s Summer 2024 campaign, highlighting the British designer’s most sustainable collection ever.
Ahead of her new album release, singer-songwriter and dancer FKA Twigs is in a custom cascading cloak hand-knit in loops of cream RAS-certified responsibly sourced alpaca yarn, pulling from Stella McCartney’s Winter 2024 runway show. The knitwear drapes over a delicate bodice and hotpants, hand-embroidered with matrixes of created diamonds. The look is finished with an iconic Falabella bag, embellished in lead-free crystals.
Marking his Met Gala debut, multiple GRAMMY-winning superstar Ed Sheeran is in bespoke soft blue iconic Savile Row tuxedo tailoring with cummerbund details inspired by the Summer 2024 runway collection. He is additionally wearing vegan black dress shoes from the Stella McCartney menswear archive as well as VRAI created diamond cufflinks and a bowtie, also encrusted with created diamonds.
Stella is in custom cream iconic Savile Row tailoring with padded shoulders and flowing trousers over a created diamond-embroidered bodysuit, as well as vegan white pumps, pulling from the Stella McCartney Winter 2024 runway collection. She is also wearing a one-of-a-kind diamond-encrusted iconic Falabella bag and jewellery, co-created with VRAI using recycled solid gold and sustainably grown diamonds.
VRAI created diamonds are grown over about four weeks in America’s Pacific Northwest, entirely removing the environmental and human toll of mining. Its plasma reactors are powered by the nearby Columbia River and use carbon from greenhouse gasses to create each diamond from the very first atom.
In addition to appearing on the Met Gala red carpet, Stella McCartney will also have two looks in the Costume Institute’s Spring 2024 exhibition – a world-first parka crafted from Protein Evolution’s biologically recycled, infinitely recyclable polyester over a jumpsuit embroidered with cellulose-based, biodegradable BioSequins, alongside an archival floral top and skirt from the Summer 2020 collection.
Transportation is provided by the first-ever all-electric 2025 Cadillac ESCALADE IQ, with an estimated 450 miles of range1 and zero tailpipe emissions – pairing cutting-edge automotive technologies with an interior emphasising the highest level of craftsmanship.
