According to the Algerian newspaper El Watan, the Egyptian Football Association has already approved Hector Cuper's departure after their upcoming match against Saudi Arabia at midnight AEST on Monday night. Cuper took the job in 2015 and has led the Pharaohs to their first World Cup finals since 1990. In 2017, he also steered the team to the final of the African Cup of Nations.

Egypt suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Russia in St. Petersburg on Tuesday. Having lost their first game 1-0 to Uruguay, they now only have a mathematical chance of advancing to the knockout round.

Egypt defender Ahmed Fathy netted an own goal two minutes after the break and the hosts doubled their lead minutes later.

Forward Denis Cheryshev scored his third goal of the tournament with a good close range finish following an excellent cross by Mario Fernandes.

Artem Dzyuba made the game safe in the 62nd minute with a wonderful individual goal, before Mohamed Salah gave Egypt a conciliation after converting from the penalty spot.

Russia is now top of Group A with six points from two games and on the verge of reaching the World Cup the round of 16 knockout stage for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union after beating Egypt 3-1 in St. Petersburg on Tuesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was unable to watch Russia's win over Egypt, but was glad to her the result.

"Unfortunately, he did not watch the match itself, because he was flying from Minsk to Moscow at that time, he was on board of a plane," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"He was informed about the results of the match as soon as he got off the plane. He reacted like the rest of our country, very positively, this is an important victory for us all, very joyful, that is why, the president was happy too," Peskov told reporters.

The spokesman added that Putin had not called Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov.
