Construction work on a key transport link connecting thousands of visitors to the eagerly-awaited Deira Islands mega project is just months away from completion.
Three new bridges leading to the entrance of the sprawling man-made islands are set to be ready to open to the public by June.
Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, director-general of Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, checked on the progress of the major road scheme along with a number of directors and engineers.
The project is being carried out by the RTA along with Nakheel, master developers of Diera Islands.
The construction work aims to improve entry and exit from the four islands from Al Khaleej Street and Abu Baker Al Siddique Street.
An existing bridge is to be revamped, including new traffic signs, street lighting and repaving.
The design of the Al Khaleej Street flyover will allow for the construction of two more bridges in the direction of Abu Baker Al Siddique Street.
Diera Islands is a lavish waterfront development which has been years in the making.
Spanning 17 million square metres, it will eventually be home to a variety of hotels, apartments, commercial buildings and marinas.
It aims to attract 250,000 residents as well as another 80,00 employees.
Traffic studies indicated that the project will generate about 110,000 journeys during peak hours, which requires a huge infrastructure of roads and public transport networks.
