The growing appetite for yacht experiences correlates with the development of the UAE as a premier yachting destination, reinforced by year-round sunshine, unique coastline and luxury marinas. Aviamost spoke to Sudhin Siva, Vice President of Shamal Holding, discussing the challenges and prospects of the yachting industry.

Dubai emerges as the global superyacht capital. How Shamal Holding, in particular Dubai Harbour contributes to this growth?

We are committed to contributing to Dubai’s vision of becoming a global superyacht capital, driven by our flagship asset, Dubai Harbour. Our commitment to excellence is evident in the world-class facilities and services offered at the region’s largest marina, providing a comprehensive home port solution for local and international boat owners, passengers, and crew. With nearly 700 berths accommodating vessels up to 160m in length and more being added as we speak, alongside a dedicated superyacht marina, Dubai Harbour Marinas offers direct access to the Arabian Gulf's pristine waters. As a result, in 2023 we saw a substantial 69% increase in Super Yachts from the previous season and a 90% rise in the combined total number of nights.

We are also committed to fostering environmental stewardship and technological innovation within the industry with initiatives like PixieDrone, the UAE's first floating waste collector, and our sustainability committee, 'Seaguardians'. Recently, Dubai Harbour Marinas also received the 5 Gold Anchor accreditation, along with prestigious titles for Clean Marinas and Super Yacht Ready by The Yacht Harbour Association. Dubai Harbour Marinas achieved the unprecedented feat of securing all three accreditations, not only on its very first try, but simultaneously, marking a world-first achievement under The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA).

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) at Dubai Harbour is a testament to the city's growing position as a global maritime hub. For three decades, DIBS has been pivotal in shaping the maritime industry's trajectory, mirroring Dubai's ambitions to be a global maritime hub.

Serving as a key venue partner, we are proud to have been part of the event's journey for the past three years, showcasing our vibrant seafront district and the region's largest marina to thousands of visitors from across the world. This year we welcomed 1,000 brands and 400 new companies from more than 55 countries, including four debut nations from Austria, Finland, Sweden, and the Republic of Korea. We also hosted more than 200 boats at our marina and facilitated 46 boat launches.

As a result of our successful collaboration, we are extending our long-term partnership with DIBS to accelerate the global yachting community’s international growth missions in the world’s most sought-after marine leisure tourism hub.

What are the latest trends and innovations in the yachting industry?

Integrated marina developments are on the rise and will contribute to the industry’s sustainability and longevity. This will be underpinned by community and greater amenities, enabling people to truly experience a maritime lifestyle.

Digital transformation and innovation are also playing a key role in the future of the maritime sector and our goal at Dubai Harbour is to transition to a highly digital environment, launching customer portals and integrating AI to better enhance functionality and efficiency.

At Dubai Harbour, we are dedicated to enhancing our community by adapting to the requirements of Dubai and what residents and visitors look for. With a focus on enhancing retail, dining, and hotel experiences, we are also responding to the growing demand for seafront living. This aligns perfectly with Dubai's urban development plans, contributing to the establishment of premier residential and tourist destinations.
