The National -- You will soon be able to pull up to a food boat when on the water in Dubai, just as you would normally drive up to a food truck.
The new concept has debuted on Dubai waters, and will deliver burgers to those passing by on boat (or kayak, jetski or paddleboard) from Saturday February 3.
The food boat will focus on burgers and is called Salt Bay (not to be confused with #saltbae) - it will be found mainly in the area around the Palm Lagoon, as well as in front of Al Sufouh Beach and Kite Beach.
The floating takeaway spot is officially called an 'aqua pod', and small vessels, jetskis and kayaks will be able to park directly in front of the pod and order food, just as you would at a normal food truck. Meanwhile, the Salt Bay team will distribute flags to large boats that can't get close enough to the pod. People on those boats can raise the flag when they want to order a burger - a Salt Bay jetski will then come and take the order, and will then bring the food to the boat once ready.
A Facebook page was set up for Salt Bay yesterday, and as is the case with food trucks, we imagine this will be where to stay updated on when Salt Bay will be flipping burgers at sea.
The unique design was created by 27-year-old architect Ahmed Youssef of the Aquatic Architects Design Studio and, interestingly, the Dubai Maritime City Authority has shown its support for the floating eatery by creating a new license category for the floating food offering.
“In Dubai, we are almost always surrounded by water; Emiratis and residents alike spend a significant amount of time at sea. At Aquatic Architects Design Studio (AADS), we understand the value of the region’s shorelines and beyond, so we saw an untapped opportunity to bring an innovative concept to the UAE," explains Youssef, the project's creator.
AADS say the design of the new concept enables the Aqua Pod to "eliminate the discharge of brine into the sea" and that it "largely runs on electrical power".
