Dubai will build a new Dh34-billion metro line as part of its largest public transport expansion to date, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced on Wednesday.

The fully underground “Gold Line” will span 42km, reaching depths of up to 40 metres and passing through 15 key areas across the emirate. The project is scheduled for completion on September 9, 2032, and will expand the Dubai Metro network by about 25 per cent.

In a statement, Sheikh Mohammed described the project as the largest transport initiative in Dubai’s history, aimed at improving connectivity across rapidly growing residential and commercial districts. The line is expected to serve around 1.5 million residents and connect more than 55 major real estate developments currently under construction.

Once operational, the Gold Line is projected to carry up to 465,000 passengers daily by 2040.

The route will run from Al Ghubaiba to Jumeirah Golf Estates, linking areas including Bur Dubai, Al Satwa, Meydan, Al Barsha South, Jumeirah Village Triangle and Dubai Production City. It will also integrate with the existing Red and Green Lines and connect with the UAE’s Etihad Rail network at two stations.

The project will use advanced tunnel-boring technology and significantly expand Dubai’s underground metro infrastructure.

Dubai Metro, launched on September 9, 2009, remains the backbone of the city’s public transport system. Subsequent lines have followed the same launch date, with the Blue Line currently under construction and scheduled to open on September 9, 2029.
