WAM - A series of community-driven sustainable development initiatives on health, educational, environmental, cultural and voluntary work will be launched during the 9th Emirates Volunteer Conference, which will open in Abu Dhabi today, 12th March.

The Zayed Giving Initiative (ZGI) and event organisers said that these programmes, worth AED10 million in investments, were funded by the private sector.

Voluntary work leaders, humanitarian actors, ministers, intellectuals, cultural personalities and representatives of 50 governmental and non-governmental organisations will meet in Abu Dhabi on Sunday for the humanitarian meeting, where they will share their experiences and experiments and discuss the means of developing humanitarian and voluntary work.

Delegates will also explore the methods for applying best international practices on governance and transparency to voluntary programmes.

The conference aims to promote the culture of giving, humanitarian and voluntary work, and to build public-private partnerships to adopt and support sustainable initiatives that will advance social and economic developments consistent with the Year of Giving 2017, as declared by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

A documentary that details humanitarian, charitable, developmental and relief initiatives by the founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, to help underprivileged people and those in need, will be screened during the opening session.

Winners of the Emirates Volunteer Award will also be honoured during the opening session of the conference.
