Two Japanese tourists were left stunned after a restaurant in Rome charged them £380 for two plates of spaghetti and fish.

A photograph of a receipt posted to travel review website TripAdvisor shows that the meal for two at Antico Caffè di Marte came to a massive €429.80 (£380). The pair had ordered two plates of fish with spaghetti, alongside glasses of water, The Local reported.

Their bill, however, included an extortionate €80 (£70) service charge.

Antico Caffe di Marte has more than 200 reviews on TripAdvisor, where it has received an average rating of two out of five stars.

Other tourists have also slammed the establishment, dubbing it 'overpriced', a 'scam' and a 'rip-off'.

In one post on the review website, a tourist described how he was charged €476.40 (£422) for a 4.8kg mixed fish platter in August.

But a representative for Antico Caffe di Marte told Corriere de la Sera that the 'menu is clear' and the only reason the Japanese tourists were charged so much is because they ordered fresh fish.

'The customers chose it at the counter themselves,' they said.

Despite the damning report, other visitors on TripAdvisor seem pleased with their experience at the restaurant, with one user praising it for its steak and beer.
