WAM – The 6th Children of Asia International Sports Games hosted by the Republic of Sakha of the Russian Federation, kicked off yesterday, and will conclude on 17th July.
The UAE is participating in the competition with 82 players, who are part of the National Olympic Committee programme, with the aim to strengthen their capacities, and develop their technical and physical skills.
The opening ceremony was attended by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, and President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Yegor Borisov, and a number of sports personalities.
The Games are being conducted with the aim of promoting ideas of the Olympic movement, development of children and youth sports, and strengthening international sports competitions.
The UAE's delegation’s participation in this Asian gathering follows the directives of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation and Chairman of the National Olympic Committee, to promote the skills of juniors to acquire more competitive experiences at the continental level.
The UAE flag was carried during the parade by Emirati swimmer Abdullah Al Hammadi, while swimmer Yousef Al Hosani, Gulf champion on three occasions, carried the flag of the Asian International Sports Games, along with five athletes from other countries.
Asia International Sports Games "Children of Asia" are held every four years since 1996 under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The event envisages a comprehensive sports, educational, and social event aspiring to enhance mental, physical, and social qualities of the younger generation, fostering respect for themselves and others, teaching ethical values, tolerance, and responsibility through promotion of popular sports and healthy and active lifestyle.
