For more than a decade, Dr. Radmila Lukian has been shaping the world of aesthetic dermatology in the Middle East. She arrived in Dubai seventeen years ago and opened Lucia Clinic in 2012, turning her academic ambitions and clinical experience into a philosophy that blends dermatology, technology, psychology, and lifestyle medicine. Today, as the founder and medical director of Lucia Clinic, she is recognized worldwide for her non-invasive approach to rejuvenation and her dedication to enhancing natural beauty.

We met with Dr. Radmila to discuss the philosophy behind her signature concept of skin decoding, her holistic approach to skincare, and her vision of ageless beauty, exploring how these principles shape the future of aesthetic medicine.

You’ve built your career around a holistic understanding of beauty. How do you define “holistic skincare” in today’s fast-evolving aesthetic industry?

Holistic skincare means treating the skin as a living, interconnected organ that reflects our physical health, emotional balance, hormonal state, lifestyle, and daily habits. Dermatology is never just about the surface. The skin is the largest organ we have and is closely linked to every system in the body, including our mental and emotional state.

When I speak about holistic skincare, I speak about diagnosis first: understanding the person, their medical background, lifestyle, hormonal balance, nutrition, sleep, stress, and even how they feel about themselves. Only then can we create a treatment strategy that improves skin health, slows aging, and enhances natural beauty. Holistic skincare is not a trend, it is the only way to achieve long-term, meaningful results.

Lucia Clinic has become a symbol of excellence in Dubai’s beauty scene and a destination for international clients and celebrities. What attracts people from around the world to your practice?

Dubai is a global hub, and it is a privilege to work in a city where patients come from every continent. But global visibility alone is not enough. Patients come to Lucia Clinic because of results, trust, and the energy we create in the treatment room.

Word of mouth is still the most powerful factor. When patients see natural, healthy, long-lasting improvements, they speak about it, they share it. But equally important is the human connection. My philosophy aligns with Hippocrates, “You must love and respect your patients”, understanding their concerns, explaining the science, building trust. This is as essential as technology.

Many people still view dermatology as purely aesthetic. How do you bridge the gap between beauty, science, and overall well-being?

For me, there is no gap. Aesthetic medicine is medicine. Dermatologists have deep scientific knowledge of the skin at cellular, structural, and functional levels. When you approach beauty through dermatology, you bring biology, biophysics, hormones, psychology, and clinical expertise into every decision.

I always tell my patients: before we enhance anything, we must first restore skin health. You cannot ignore acne and jump to lip fillers. You cannot chase trends without understanding how the skin behaves. My goal is to create harmony between science, lifestyle, and beauty, not separate them.

Your approach includes decoding the skin’s unique needs. What does “skin decoding” mean?

Skin decoding is a personalized diagnostic method based on a deep understanding of the skin’s structure. The skin has three main layers, and the epidermis alone has seven sub-layers. Each layer may require a different technology. It could be lasers, ultrasound, radiofrequency and the art lies in synchronizing them safely and effectively.

Not every technology works for every patient. Some deliver excellent results for one skin type but minimal results for another. Skin decoding allows us to predict which treatments will stimulate the cells in the right layer, at the right depth, and in the right way to achieve long-term regeneration. It is both science and intuition developed through experience.

In an age of filters and perfectionism, how do you guide patients toward embracing natural beauty?

Social media often promotes unrealistic standards, especially for young people. I see it as part of my mission to spread awareness about authenticity. Perfect beauty is often boring—what makes us beautiful is our individuality.

Before any treatment, I analyze the psychological motivation behind the patient’s request. Are they seeking enhancement or trying to fix something rooted in anxiety or low self-esteem? My role is to protect natural beauty, not distort it. Healthy skin, preserved facial features and harmony always come before trends.

You emphasize the synergy of mental well-being, lifestyle, and skincare. How do you help patients make this connection?

Skin reflects how we live. Nutrition, sleep, hormonal balance, emotional stress, smoking, sun exposure – all of these shape the face more than any treatment. When I evaluate a patient, I guide them through simple lifestyle adjustments that can significantly improve skin quality. This is especially important today, with increasing attention on premenopause and menopause, which affect over a billion women globally.

True radiance comes when the internal and external are aligned. My role is to help patients understand this synergy and build habits that support long-term skin health.

As we enter a new era of aesthetic medicine, how do you define “ageless beauty”?

Chronological age is just a number. Biological age is written on the skin. People age at different speeds, and with modern non-invasive technologies like advanced ultrasound and regenerative treatments we can support the skin to age gracefully and maintain vitality.

Ageless beauty is not about looking 25 forever. It is about looking healthy, confident, and harmonious at every stage of life. When patients feel good and their features remain authentic, they radiate a timeless beauty that no filter can replicate.

Thank you, Dr. Radmila, for sharing your insights and valuable expertise.
