The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially kicked off in Mexico City on Friday with a vibrant opening ceremony featuring international music stars, dazzling performances and an atmosphere of celebration that captivated tens of thousands of fans at the iconic Azteca Stadium.
The tournament's opening event marked a historic moment for Mexico, which is hosting World Cup matches on home soil for the first time in four decades. More than 82,000 spectators gathered at the legendary venue, creating an electric atmosphere ahead of the opening match between Mexico and South Africa.
Global music icon Shakira headlined the ceremony, delivering a high-energy performance alongside a cast of dancers. The entertainment lineup also included Colombian star J Balvin, Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy and Venezuelan singer Danny Ocean, reflecting the international spirit of the tournament.
Football fans from across Mexico and around the world arrived in the capital to witness the opening celebrations. Many described the event as a once-in-a-lifetime experience and expressed optimism about the host nation's prospects in the competition.
The festivities continued on the pitch as Mexico secured a 2-0 victory over South Africa, giving the home side a winning start to its World Cup campaign and prompting celebrations throughout the stadium.
However, the opening day was not without challenges. Outside the venue, security forces responded to sporadic clashes involving groups of protesters seeking to draw attention to various social issues. According to Mexican authorities, a small number of masked demonstrators broke away from larger protest groups and confronted law enforcement officers. Officials later confirmed that the situation had been brought under control.
Several demonstrations also took place across the city, including marches by teachers and relatives of missing persons, who sought to use the global spotlight surrounding the World Cup to raise awareness of their causes.
Mexico is co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, making this edition of the tournament the largest in the competition's history. While opening ceremonies were also held in the United States and Canada, Mexico City hosted the tournament's first official match, placing the country at the center of global attention.
As the month-long football festival begins, organizers hope the tournament will showcase not only world-class sport but also the cultural diversity and hospitality of the three host nations.
