The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has formally called on FIFA to investigate the officiating team following Egypt's dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, alleging "double standards" in the application of refereeing decisions and the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Egypt appeared to be on course for one of the biggest victories in the nation's football history after taking a two-goal lead against the defending champions. However, Argentina mounted a remarkable comeback, scoring three unanswered goals to book a place in the quarterfinals. The match has since become one of the tournament's most controversial fixtures.
The EFA's complaint centers on two key incidents. The first came when Mostafa Ziko thought he had doubled Egypt's lead, only for VAR to intervene and rule the goal out after officials identified a foul by Marwan Attia earlier in the attacking move. Later, with the score level, Egypt appealed for a penalty after Mohamed Salah went down inside the box, but referee François Letexier allowed play to continue without another VAR review. Moments later, Argentina launched the attack that resulted in Enzo Fernández scoring the winning goal.
In a strongly worded statement, the Egyptian federation said it could not remain silent over what it described as inconsistent refereeing and the improper use of VAR. The EFA argued that similar incidents were treated differently throughout the match, creating what it called "double standards" that ultimately influenced the outcome. The federation has requested a full investigation into both the on-field officials and the VAR team, while also seeking the removal of the match officials from the remainder of the tournament.
Head coach Hossam Hassan echoed the federation's frustrations after the match, insisting his side had been denied crucial decisions during pivotal moments. While expressing pride in his players' performance, Hassan questioned the consistency of the officiating and suggested the controversial decisions overshadowed what had been an impressive display by Egypt.
Despite the painful exit, Egypt's World Cup campaign has been widely regarded as a significant step forward. The Pharaohs recorded their first-ever World Cup victory and reached the knockout stage for the first time, achievements that have been celebrated by supporters despite the disappointment of their elimination.
FIFA has not announced any disciplinary action regarding the officials, and reports indicate the governing body continues to support the match officials while reviewing the complaints submitted by the Egyptian federation. Argentina, meanwhile, advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face Switzerland as it continues its title defense.
The controversy has reignited debate over the consistency of VAR at the 2026 World Cup, with players, coaches, and supporters once again questioning how similar incidents can produce different outcomes. Whether FIFA's review leads to any changes remains uncertain, but the Egypt-Argentina encounter is likely to remain one of the tournament's defining talking points.
