Almost a quarter of people in the world will be obese by 2045

New research from various cities in the world presented at this year's European Congress on Obesity in Vienna, Austria (23-26 May) demonstrate that if current trends continue, almost a quarter (22%) of the people in the world will be obese by 2045 (up from 14% in 2017), and one in eight (12%) will have type 2 diabetes (up from 9% in 2017).

Dubai Zen Tower blaze: Initial investigation into cause of fire revealed

A fire that forced more than 100 residents to flee a Dubai Marina tower and left the building badly damaged began in the kitchen of a business on the ground floor, investigators believe.

Fire and rescue chief Brigadier Rashid Khalifa Buflasa said an unspecified flammable substance caught alight and quickly spread to the rest of Zen Tower.

The first five floors appeared to suffer the most damage, though the flames reached the upper floors on the morning of May 13.

Ninety one beggars have been arrested in Dubai and Sharjah since Thursday, police said as they warned the public not to be duped by ploys and tales of woe.

That figure compared to 154 arrests during the whole month of Ramadan last year.

Police said most were caught in markets and near mosques.

Most were found to be on visit visas, a common finding suggesting they flew into the Emirates just to make money.

The UAE has banned a number of gaming websites – including a game creation platform that claims to have 56 million players across the globe each month.

Roblox, aimed at children aged eight to 15, was one of a number of websites blocked on the order of the UAE Attorney General, Dr Hamad Al Shamsi.

Surveillance cameras have been fitted to 6,500 taxis in Dubai to ensure drivers are complying with professional driving standards and moral attitudes.

More than half of the Roads and Transport Authority’s fleet of taxis have had the monitoring equipment installed to check up on the conduct of cabbies.

The step conforms to the RTA’s strategic goal of people happiness and smart city drive.
