Emirati fishing boats fired upon by 'pirates' in Gulf of Oman

A fleet of Emirati fishing vessels was fired upon by suspected pirates while sailing in the Gulf of Oman, according to boat crews.

A captain and crew showed photos and video footage of their engines riddled with bullets as a result of the encounter about 12.30pm on Tuesday.

“They appeared from nowhere and told us to go back and immediately started shooting at our boat,” Yousef Baroun, a 52-year-old Emirati fisherman, told the The National.

Dubai Police investigation under way after two pupils from same private school commit suicide

Two pupils attending the same private school in the Al Qusais area of Dubai claimed their own lives in two separate incidents one day apart.

A 16-year-old Filipina girl hung herself in her bedroom last Tuesday evening. Her mother, a nurse, found the body and called Dubai police’s operation room.

The girl, who lived with her mother alone, is believed to have suffered from depression and had previously attempted suicide.

flydubai, the Dubai-based airline, announced today that flights to Sulaimaniyah will resume from 10 May 2018. The carrier now operates to five points in Iraq including Baghdad, Basra, Erbil and Najaf. The decision to relaunch the flights was taken following the Iraqi authorities’ announcement that that the airport reopened in March 2018.

UAE President passes decree paving way for expats to represent country’s sports teams

Expatriates will soon be eligible to join local clubs and represent the country in all sports in what is being called a "ground-breaking occasion in the history of UAE sports" following a decree from the President, Sheikh Khalifa.

The UAE will fund the rebuilding of the Great Mosque of Al Nuri, which was last year destroyed by ISIS in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
