Dubai's first-half visitor numbers stay flat at 8.1 million

Dubai received 8.1 million tourists in the first half of this year, a flat year-on-year growth, but the number of visitors from China and Russia in particular rose sharply, thanks to relaxation in visa requirements for the nationals of the two countries.

Hundreds of health hazard buildings have been demolished in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi Municipality has already pulled down 220 eyesore sites as part of a major safety crackdown.

The abandoned buildings have been deemed a danger to neighbourhood safety and security, and a breeding grounds for insects and roads.

Demolitions are taking place on the island of Abu Dhabi, its fishing port, sectors West 50 and East 14, the Free Zone and Al Samha.

More than 1,000 road accidents have been recorded in Dubai since the start of the week as the UAE has been engulfed in a heavy dust storm.

Dubai police’s control room received around 16,000 emergency calls, with poor visibility leading to dangerous driving conditions.
